Editing With Word

You can create a text article in a word processing program such as Microsoft Word, then import the file into the selected frame. You can also choose to use MS Word in place of the Text window.

Using Microsoft Word
This option is most suitable if you have large blocks of text to edit. Another advantage of editing in Word is that, if you give the Word styles the same names as those used in Design Essentials, the corresponding Design Essentials styles are applied to the text.

For example, if your chosen design allows for the heading styles: Heading 1, Heading 2, and Heading 3, and you label your Word document using these same style names, then the style names are carried over to your Design Essentials document.

Note: If you apply style names that do not exist in Design Essentials, the text will be displayed as Normal style. Remember also, that font (typeface), styles, sizes, and colours are ultimately determined by the Design Essentials design, NOT by any attributes you set in Word.

Editing In MS word
If you want to use Word to edit text:

  • Select a frame to be edited by clicking in the text frame on the displayed page.
  • Choose Rich Text Format (RTF) from the Convert File dialog.
  • Open the Tools menu in the Design Essentials window and choose: Edit in MS Word.

Design Essentials highlights the selected text frame and starts Word, if it is not currently running. In Design Essentials, the Text, Color, Layout, and Images buttons are replaced with Word Edit functions.

  • Edit your text in Word.
  • To update the text on your design page, press the Apply button in the Design Essentials window.
  • When you are finished editing the text in a frame, press the OK button. The edited text is removed from Word; however, you can continue to edit additional text frames.

Importing Text
You can import either a Rich Text File (RTF) or a plain text file (TXT)

  • Select a frame to be edited by clicking in the text frame on the displayed page.
  • Choose Rich Text Format (RTF) from the Convert File dialog.
  • Choose Import File from the Tools menu. In the Open window, choose the file to be imported. The imported text replaces all current text in the selected text frame.

Tip: If you want to retain the current text to use elsewhere in your document, move it to the scrapbook. You can then import the new text into the empty text frame.

    Dragging and Dropping Text
Text files that are in plain text file format (TXT) or in Rich Text Format (RTF) can be dragged from Explorer (Windows 95) into a text frame. This feature is especially useful for creating multi-page documents, as you can take advantage of files that have been previously written.

    Using Your Scrapbook
If you like, you can drag and drop text files into the scrapbook rather than directly into a text frame. Your scrapbook can hold a number of text and image files, scraps of text, and OLE objects at the same time. This allows you to try various blocks of text on different pages and in different frames.
